The Twin Towns Triathlon Club has had a successful but challenging season. However, our numbers seem to have stabilised and we even have a few new members who have continued to enjoy the club throughout the season. I feel the most effective way of introducing and retaining members is by creating a friendly, happy and welcoming environment. I like to think we achieve this on a weekly basis.
The main challenge this year has been the weather. I don’t recall having two weekends in a row of fine weather. In fact it is hard to remember many fine days at all. However, we are still averaging around 25 to 30 competitors each week. Our largest week saw 50 competitors on the course (must have been a fine day).
We have continued to evolve the program to include the popular Aqua Bike for those that can’t run and the Aqua Run for wet days. Both are popular. Also Josh, our esteemed timekeeper, has been busy. The graphic presentation of the results you have to admit are impressive. He has also been responsible for the updated and modernised website.
The other big challenge facing the club is the sheer number of outside activities now available to active people like our club members. If it’s not gravel bike rides, outside Triathlons then it might be simply a camping trip. All these activities take a toll on numbers.
On a couple of occasions our resident Chef Clive has fed us breakfast and is again on the job today. Most notably was the memorial team event day, where I think everyone had a fun time and enjoyable breakfast, combined with probably the best weather conditions this season.
Although our numbers are significantly down from the Oasis Pool days, I think we have an awesome core group who consistently start the weekend off in the best way possible.
I am retiring from the committee this year as I think it is important to have younger people with new ideas involved. The committee is very proactive and most of the members are continuing, so I am very comfortable with the future of the club.
