Joe competing at Twinnies
This morning we all remembered our great friend and former Twinnies member, Joe Kelly when we took part in our annual Joe Kelly Memorial race. Joe’s work brought him and his wife Laura to Australia from Canada and we were lucky to have them both members of our club for 4 years. Joe was tragically killed while doing what he loved – competing in a twilight half marathon event in Brisbane. A freak storm built up during the event and he was hit by a branch while racing. Joe had competed in countless triathlons for more than 20

years, conquering all distances – sprint – olympic – half and full ironman events with his strongest leg being the run. Laura kindly sponsored our breakfast this morning so we all owe her a big thank you when she visits us next month. It was great to be able to FaceTime her during the breakfast so she could feel a part of our celebration for Joe.
We had a great turn up for the Super Team Sprint with over 60 competitors. We formed teams of 3 with each competitor completing all 3 legs of the triathlon. Congratulations to the winning team – Trent, Vaughn and Lisa! A great effort.
Organising a special event always takes extra work and help so thank you to all who stepped up this morning to make sure the race was successful and everyone had a great time. In particular, thank you to Kevie for the race briefing and doing a great job organising the teams. Scott Thompson did a brilliant job making the pancake batter in the early hours of the morning while Kent followed on doing a sensational job cooking the pancakes! Thank you to Rob Gillies and Wendy Sanders for setting up the breakfast and also to Clive Pearce for baking the delicious Pumpkin and Date Healthy Fruit Cake. Kyle Mooney also donated a whiteboard – thank you! And again to Laura for sponsoring our Canadian Pancake, Maple Syrup and strawberry breakfast!
60 Seconds with Scott Styman
This morning Stu spoke to Scotty Styman who is a local lad and has been a member of Twinnies and competed in triathlons for more than 27 years. Scott has done an amazing 490 races at Twinnies and will very shortly join a very elite club of members in the 500+ club! Scott has competed in all triathlon distances and is an ace tennis coach at the Club Banora courts.
Marshalls
Thank you to Greg Freeman and Steve West who were our course Marshalls today.
We still have a large number of unfilled marshalling spots. Please consider volunteering as we can’t run the race if our marshalling spots aren’t filled. Thank you in advance!!
Next week marshalls are; Rob Worth on Fraser, Lorraine Bassett at Woodlands Drive, James Mourant at Lochlomond RAB and Matt Stanley at the Tooloona RAB.
AGM
Don’t forget that the AGM is on March 7th after the race. We would love some new faces on the committee so if you’re keen, fill in a nomination form when you’re next at the club.
Finally wishing everyone a super Australia Day tomorrow and enjoy the long weekend!
Tracy 🙂
