It appears that most people are back from their Christmas break, given the huge numbers in attendance this morning.
MILESTONES:
Dave DQ de Closey finally managed after 16 years of attendance to get his 300th race completed.
At a rough count that’s only 3000 laps of the pool, 4350km riding around Banora Point and Terranora and a 1350km run, and don’t forget an approx. $3000 in entry fees.
MARSHALS:
Today your course marshals were Scott Bornholt up on Fraser, Julie Lowe at Woodlands Drive and Gerard Robards at the Lochlomond RAB. Next week those smiling faces will be replaced by Ross Salmon, Cheyne Hampson and Jeff Stella. Remember, if you wish to compete in the Club Championships, you need to have marshaled once during the season, we still have some holes to fill so please let me know what date you would like by sending me an email.
TOTAL TRI RACES:
We have uploaded a file to the Facebook page which shows the name and race count of every person since Twin Towns Triathlon Club commenced by Doug Neil back in 1989. We’ll have a link on the website soon. If you’re interested in the history, click on this link. There has been a request from the Chief Time Keeper Dave DQ de Closey mD, that any person who has marshaled this season and completed the triathlon course to please send me your name via the contacts page , if I don’t here from you, it will be presumed that you only marshaled and did not race.
PENALTY BOX:
A motorist witnessed one of our competitors travel through a Red light this morning and reported it to President Matt. The offending cyclist threw his hands up to Matt and he has subsequently been disqualified from todays race and the next race. Just remember there is no prize money or podium box at Twinnies and no excuses for breaking the road rules.
DRAFTING:
Apparently there are some competitor/s hanging off the rear wheel (Drafting=Cheating) and getting a tow around.
The rule is don’t get too close to the person in front on the bike – this is called DRAFTING and is not allowed in triathlon. The draft zone is 7 metres long (roughly four bike lengths) starting from the front edge of your front wheel and 3 metres wide (1.5 metres either side). If you stay at least 4 bike lengths behind the competitor in front of you, you will correctly avoid the draft. Once you are closer than this, you have 15 seconds to overtake the rider in front and you must be GAINING on them at all times during that 15 seconds. The correct way to overtake is to stay to the left, ride up behind the person in front, then when you are close enough, go around them (checking behind you first) and once you have passed them move back to the left of the road as soon as it is safe to do so. You must overtake to the outside (right hand side of the person you are passing) NOT on the inside (left).
RANDOM DRAW WINNERS:
Guy Davoren – Tweed Coast Chiropractic, Mark Davies- Coast Cyclery, Clive Pearce- Twisted Fig café, and Greg Freeman – Therapies on Boyd.
AGM:
Our annual AGM will be held on Saturday 2nd March approximately 08:00am following the race, with that we are calling for nominations for the committee. If you are interested in bringing enthusiasm and new ideas to a very progressive Tri Club committee you can collect a nomination from the timing desk next Saturday.
DOKTOR BIKE:
We had a visit from Doktor Bike- Paul Woodger today who reported on a number of observations he made today. Cyclist overtaking and not checking behind them, in more than one occasion he saw cars taking evasive action as cyclist were overtaking slower riders. This is particularly important when riding up to the roundabout on Fraser Drive, where I have seen many just move to the centre of the road without checking if there are any cars coming up behind. He also spoke on the need to have the chin strap on your helmet correctly adjusted so that the helmet does not roll forward down your forehead.
UNIFORM:
For those that placed a uniform order, it has arrived. Please see Tracy Foyster next Saturday to collect. And for those with an artistic streak in them, remember we are running a competition to design our new Triathlon uniform so get designing.
If you have found your way to this point, Dont forget to register for next weeks race, hit the big green button at the top of this page.
